NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - The Navy is prohibiting delivery drivers from entering its installations from North Carolina to Maine if they have had a felony conviction within the past 10 years.
The commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic ordered criminal background checks for everyone who uses a Transportation Worker Identification Credential to gain access to a base in the region. The move comes after a civilian truck driver who was a convicted felon drove onto Naval Station Norfolk last week, walked out onto a pier and onto a warship before disarming a sailor and using her weapon to shoot and kill another sailor.
The Navy has said Jeffrey Tyrone Savage possessed a TWIC card, but had no legitimate business on base the night of the shooting.
He pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 2008.
