Bell Pepper Garden by Allen SmithSenate Bill S510, the Food Safety Modernization Act, won a majority vote of 74 – 25 on Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 to proceed with the bill that would, in the beginning, have made home gardening and storing your own seeds illegal. Working on the same scare tactics for the sake of safety, the bill received a record vote attendance of 250.
The bill is described as a bill that will “amend the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act with respect to the safety of the food supply.” The bill is being pushed by seed giant, Monsanto and their countless subsidiaries. John Ashcroft and Donald Rumsfeld are reported to own stock in Monsanto and have made millions of dollars from the company. Not surprising, they are big supporters of Bill S510.
The original bill had been called the most “dangerous bill in the history of America,” which would have granted the U.S. Government new authority over the public’s right to grow, trade and transport any foods. Furthermore, the original bill would have given the Federal Government the power to regulate the garden that you grow in your own backyard. It would have granted the power to arrest and imprison anyone selling home-grown vegetables at farmer markets and would criminalize the transporting of organic produce if you did not comply with the authoritarian rules.
If made law, this bill would place all food production, even from your own personal garden, under the authority of the Department of Homeland Security. It would also sell out the U. S. Sovereignty over our own food supply, by ceding to the authority of both the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Codex Alimentarius. The bill would ultimately place Monsanto as the head of a new monopoly.
Fortunately, the bill in its original state was thrown out and revised. Under the new bill, growing your own garden will not be illegal. However, gardeners who plan to sell their own home-grown vegetables to restaurants or for those farmer markets, will have to abide by a USDA inspection of their garden. Hurt the most, will be the commercial farmers and seed importers which will also have to meet up to the new USDA standards. Standards that will largely be aimed at supporting Monsanto as the primary seed supplier; an action that will hurt millions of farmers who, for generations, have stored their own seeds for future crops.
